Use of Oxygen Plant in Steel Industry
Steel industry is known as the largest consumer of commercially produced oxygen. More than 55% of all commercially produced oxygen is used in the steel industry. Oxygen is vital for sustaining life on the planet earth. Oxygen constitutes 21% of planet earth’s atmosphere. Nitrogen also occurs in the form of various compounds such as silicates, oxides and water comprising around 46.6 % of the planet by mass. Oxygen has got numerous industrial applications besides medical uses. Use of oxygen plant in steel industry is very handy because steel industry requires oxygen a big scale.

Installing oxygen plant machinery you can produce large quantities of the gas at high purity through the liquefaction & distillation of atmospheric air. Cryogenic distillation is the process used in the machinery. There are other methods as well for commercial production of the gas with lower purity around 93% by adsorption technologies (pressure swing adsorption (PSA), or vacuum-pressure swing adsorption (VPSA or VSA). Gaseous oxygen in short is known as GOX and liquid oxygen as LIN.

Applications of oxygen in steel industry
Steel industry is the largest consumer of oxygen. Various applications include:
• In the making of steel in the primary steel making processes
• In the enrichment of blast air in the blast furnace iron making process
• For oxy-fuel cutting of the cast product in continuous casting machine
• In oxy- fuel burners in reheating furnace
• OXY lancing of steel and steel scarfing
• For treatment of carbon monoxide gas poisoning
• Used with fuel gases in gas welding, gas cutting, flame cleaning, flame hardening, and flame straightening.

Oxygen plant is used to generate gaseous liquid oxygen. Liquid oxygen is easy to store and transport. LOX is a cryogenic liquid, which is defined as liquefied gases that have a normal boiling point below – 150 deg C. Liquid oxygen is known to have a boiling point of (-) 183 deg C. There is big difference between LOX and surroundings, which is why LOX needs to be insulated. Specialized equipment must be used for handling and storage of LOX.
